That's a nice set of melons!: Yubari melon pair sells for 1.5 million yen

Fruit is a bit pricier in Japan than elsewhere in the world, but the Japanese Yubari melon really takes the cake on most expensive fruit.

The expensive and prestigious Yubari melon.

Yubari melons are grown in Yubari, Hokkaido, and are one of the most expensive fruit in Japan. They are usually sold in pairs, and are priced between $50-$100 at local Japanese department stores. Because of their high end price tag, these melons are usually given as gifts to hosts or employees and are always humbly appreciated.

The first pair of Yubari melons of the season are usually sold through auction, and can go for extremely high prices.
This year, the winning bidder paid 1.5 million yen for the pair (that's about $12,400 US) and can be seen proudly holding his purchase in the winning photo.
